For modern electromechanical systems requiring micro-drive solutions, standard iron-core permanent magnet DC motors present significant limitations. The primary bottleneck is cogging torque (detent torque), which stems from the magnetic interaction between the iron teeth of the rotor and the permanent magnets of the stator. This interaction causes torque ripple, rotor vibration, and electromagnetic losses, restricting precision in applications such as surgical tools, aerospace actuators, and high-frequency optical focus drives.
Coreless (or slotless) DC motors redefine micro-drive architecture. By utilizing a self-supporting, skew-wound cylindrical rotor made entirely of copper wire, these motors eliminate the iron core from the rotating assembly. The coil rotates inside or around a stationary permanent magnet structure, delivering key mechanical advantages:
The lack of a heavy steel core allows the rotor to be exceptionally lightweight. This translates to incredibly low moment of inertia, enabling mechanical response time constants of less than 10 milliseconds. Acceleration is instantaneous and precise.
